Poland extends passport validity from 10 to 15 years starting June 2026
Poland will increase passport validity from 10 to 15 years beginning June 1, 2026, following parliamentary approval. The change aims to reduce administrative burden and align with EU standards.
Poland's parliament has approved legislation extending the validity of Polish passports from 10 to 15 years, effective June 1, 2026. The change applies to all new passports issued from that date forward, while existing passports will remain valid until their current expiration dates.
Who is affected
The extension applies to Polish citizens, including those who naturalized after meeting residency requirements. Foreigners holding temporary or permanent residence cards (Karta Pobytu) are not affected, as these documents are issued separately and follow different renewal schedules. However, dual citizens and naturalized Poles will benefit from the longer validity period.
Cost and application process
The fee for a standard 15-year passport will be 180 PLN, up from the current 140 PLN for a 10-year passport. Rush processing options will continue to be available for an additional fee. Applications can be submitted at any voivodeship office or Polish consulate abroad, with processing times expected to remain at 30 days for standard requests.
For foreigners pursuing Polish citizenship, this change means fewer passport renewals over a lifetime once naturalization is complete. If you're currently in the naturalization process and expect to receive citizenship in the coming months, it may be worth waiting until after June 1 to apply for your first Polish passport to take advantage of the extended validity. Existing passport holders don't need to take any action—your current document remains valid until its printed expiration date.
